Integrated Ground and on-Board system for Support of the Aircraft Safe Take-off and Landing

The GABRIEL is a European Commission funded "Out-of-the-Box" project. The "Integrated Ground and on-Board system for Support of the Aircraft Safe Take-off and Landing" (GABRIEL) proposal was based on a system using magnetic levitation technology to enable aircraft take-off and landing. This unique solution will reduce aircraft fuel consumption, CO2 and NOx emissions at airports and en-route and also reduce the noise levels in the vicinity of the airports.

From the technological side the project has investigated if this solution is feasible, which technological elements are to be further investigated and which are the possible solutions to successfully use this technology.

From the economical side the project has investigated the possible economic benefits of application of such system taking into consideration not only the fuel consumption during the take-off and landing, but the possible benefits occurring on the ground.

Third area of the investigation was be the environmental impact of such system. According to the calculations, the system will allow lower emissions of the CO2 and NOx and noise in the vicinity of the airport and en-route as well. The project consortium consisted of the leading research institutions in field of aeronautics like REA - TECH Engineering and Architect Ltd., Hungary (REA), Slot Consulting Ltd. (Slot), Delft University of Technology (TUD), French Aeronautics and Space Research Center (ONERA), RWTH Aachen University, Consulting Engineer Office Dieter Rogg, AD Cuenta B.V., National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR), Rzeszow University of Technology, Wroclaw University of Technology (WrUT), Italian Aerospace Research Center (CIRA), University of Salerno (UoS). Slot Consulting has developed animated material to present the concept in visual way.
